Free Family-Friendly Things To Do in Toronto This May Long Weekend

The May long weekend is here, and for many families in Toronto, it’s the perfect chance to step outside, reset, and spend quality time together. The good news? You don’t need a big budget to make meaningful memories. Across the city, there are several free and low-cost activities happening that are perfect for families, children, and youth.

Here are three simple and accessible ways to enjoy the long weekend in Toronto.

🍴 Festival of Flavours at Sugar Beach

This weekend, the waterfront at Sugar Beach is being transformed into an open-air food celebration called the Festival of Flavours.

Families can walk through a vibrant outdoor market featuring a variety of food vendors offering international flavours, sweet treats, and creative dishes. It’s a relaxed, walk-through style event where you can enjoy the atmosphere, music, and waterfront views without needing to commit to a full sit-down experience.

For those who want to explore different foods, there are also $5 tasting options available through a VIP Taste Pass at participating vendors, making it easier to sample smaller portions and try new things.

This is a great option for families who want a casual outing that feels fun, social, and culturally diverse.

💦 Splash & Spray Pads Across Toronto

Starting this weekend, more than 140 splash and spray pads across Toronto parks are officially open for the season. These outdoor water play spaces are completely free and operate daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. until mid-September.

They’re a simple but effective way for children to cool down, stay active, and enjoy outdoor play. Families can bring snacks, towels, and sunscreen and easily turn a local park visit into a full afternoon outing.

It’s one of the most accessible summer activities in the city and a great way to support healthy, active play.

🏛️ Free Entry to Toronto History Museums

Families can also take advantage of free general admission at 10 City-run museums across Toronto this weekend.

These museums offer a chance to explore local history, culture, and interactive exhibits in a hands-on learning environment. It’s a great indoor or mixed-weather option for families looking for something calm, educational, and engaging.

Please note:

  • Fort York National Historic Site is closed until July 31

  • Zion Schoolhouse and Market Gallery are closed for upcoming exhibitions

  • All museums are closed on Monday

A Gentle Reminder for Families

Long weekends don’t need to be expensive or overly planned to be meaningful. Often, the best memories come from simple moments — walking together, trying something new, or just spending uninterrupted time as a family.

Whether you’re exploring the waterfront, playing at a splash pad, or stepping into a museum, we hope this weekend gives your family a chance to connect, recharge, and enjoy the city together.
